The oceans are home to some of the strangest creatures known to man. Below are some of the world’s weirdest fish.
The ocean is the beginning of life on Earth, and symbolizes formlessness, the unfathomable, and chaos. The ocean can also be seen as a symbol of stability, as it can exist largely unchanged for centuries.
“One fish in your net is better than ten thousand in the river.”
Fangtooths fish are beryciform fish of the family Anoplogastridae (sometimes spelled “Anoplogasteridae”) that live in the deep sea. The name is from Greek anoplo meaning “unarmed” and gaster meaning “stomach”.
Fangtooth fish have a dreadful appearance! They also have disproportionate teeth that make them even more frightening. They have small eyes set high above their heads. In spite of the scary looks, the fangtooth fish is harmless to humans.
Whitemargin stargazer (Uranoscopus sulphureus) is a fish of family Uranoscopidae, widespread in the Indopacific: Red Sea, Indonesia, Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga. Marine reef-associated fish, up to 45.0 cm maximal length. Also known as the pop-eye fish, one may cite the whitemargin stargazer buried in the sand with only the eyes and mouth showing.
The weirdest thing about the stargazer is that possesses electric organs in its body. As a result, it can discharge about 50 volts within the right water temperatures.
A small fish with very large jaws which lives in shallow tropical seas. It often inhabits a burrow in the sand, the walls of which are lined with pieces of shell and stone. Jawfish possess a single, long dorsal fin with 9-12 spines and a caudal fin that can be either rounded or pointed.
The jawfish is weird in the manner in which it reproduces. The female jawfish lays eggs. Once the male fish fertilizes the eggs laid, it places them into his mouth for incubation. They stay in his mouth for 1-2 weeks then hatch. Normal jawfish grow up to 4-5 inches long.
It’s also known as the Small scale Firefish/Goblinfish/Scorpionfish/ Stingfish/Rockfish, Flathead Scorpionfish,Tasseled Goblinfish/Rockfish, & Weedy Stingfish. The tassled scorpionfish is a carnivore which grows to a maximum length of 36 cm.
It has ray fins which possess venomous spines. The Tassled scorpionfish has unique vibrant orange colors and markings that allow it to camouflage itself well in between the rocky reefs. Its well-camouflaged skin enables it to hide and wait for prey to pass by to strick it.
Boxfish, also called trunkfish, or cowfish, any of a small group of shallow-water marine fishes of the family Ostraciontidae (or Ostraciidae), distinguished by a hard, boxlike, protective carapace covering most of the body. The shape is a result of the shell-like bony structure called carapace. Boxfish is very peaceful in spite of it possessing deadly toxin.
The members of the family, found along the bottom in warm and tropical seas throughout the world, are considered good to eat and are often dried as curios.
The lionfish is amongst the most beautiful and unique fishes in the world. It possesses red, orange, white, and black or brown stripes. The stripes are arranged in a zebra-like pattern. In spite of being venomous, lionfish is a food delicacy in some countries. Additionally, some people keep lionfish as a pet.
